ASEAN Federation of Cardiology (AFC)The ASEAN Federation of Cardiology (AFC) was formed by the cooperation among the representative of the National Heart Association from five ASEAN countries
1. Indonesia
2. Malaysia
3. Philippine
4. Singapore
5. Thailand.

 

            It was founded in 1973, to be a nonpolitical organnization aiming to imporve standard and practice of cardiology in the ASEAN regent.

            The Federation is operated by the counciler members who compose president, vice-president, secretary-treasurer, president and secretary general from the National Heart Association. Two addition members are pointed by the president to be the chairman of education and the chairman of prevention and control of Cardiovascular Diseases. The immediate Past-president is also inclued in the council members.

            Member of the National Heart Association automaticully become the member of the federation. The ASEAN Congress of Cardiology is organizing annually by relocating among the member of ASEAN Countries. The date is flexible to avoide coincide with larger cardiology meeting such as the Asian Pacific Congress of Cardiology or The World Congress of Cardiology. Chairman of the organizing committee of the preceding congress became the president of the federation.

            The 1st meeting of the Asean Congress of Cardiology was held in Bali, Indonesia, in 1975 under the chairmanship of Dr.Sukaman Sumaryone who subseqently became the first president of the federation.

            There are four decades of the federation.

            For the first decade, there are four subsequent congresses.

            - The 2nd ASEAN Congress was held in Manila, Philippine, in 1977 under the chairmanship of Dr.Avenilo Aventura.

            - The 3rd ASEAN Congress was held in Singarpore in 1980 under the chairmanship of Dr. NC Tan.

            - The 4th ASEAN Congress was held in KualaLumpur, Malaysia, in 1980 under Dr.Datu Eapen who the chairmanship of organize.

            - The 5th ASEAN Congress was held in Bangkok, Thailand, in 1984 under the chairmanship of Dr.Kumpol Prachuabmoh.

            For The second decade of the federation, it started with the 6th ASEAN Congress was held in Jakarta, Indonesia, in 1986 under the chairmanship of Dr.Lilly Rilantono. Two new events added to the congress and become tranditional in subsequent congresses.

            The first event is The Young Investigator Award, which is competition in scientific paper presentation by young member below 40 year of age from ASEAN countries. International justices will point to a shot fairness in selecting the award. The receiver of the first young invetigater award was representative from Indonesia and Thailand.

            Being the first president of The ASEAN Federation of Cardiology (AFC) and well respected member from both the ASEAN and Indonesia Medical Community, Dr. Sukaman was honor by the Sukaman Lecture during the 6th congress. The lecture was “The Trend of Cardiovascular Problems in ASEAN”. The subsequent Sukaman lecturer was selected from the outstanding cardiology in ASEAN countries, not from the host country and on rotation among the ASEAN countries. The lecture was subsequently changed to be Sukaman memorial lecture after Dr.Sukaman’s dead in 1987.

          - The 7th ASEAN Congress was held in Manila in 1988 under the chairmanship of Dr.Ramiro Mde Guia. The first Sukaman memorial lecture was stared in this congress. The lecturer was Dr.Lily Rilantono from Indonesia with topic “ASEAN Cardiology: Today and Tomorrow”.

          - The 8th ASEAN Congress was held in Singapore in 1990 under the chairmanship of Dr.Joseph Sheares. Dr.Kumpol Prachuabmoh from Thailand was the second Sukaman memorial lecturer with the topic “Changing Patterns of Cardiac Surgery in ASEAN Countries”.

          - The 9th ASEAN Congress was held in KualaLumpur in 1992 with Dr.Kenneth Chin was the chairman of the organizing commette and the thirth Sukaman memorial lecture’s topic was “Deverlopment of Philippine Cardiology and Cardiology in ASEAN Setting”. Also in 1992, the federation published their own ASEAN Heart Journal to replace the Philippine Heart Journal which is adopted to be an official publication. Since 1976, Dr.H.B. Calleja from Philippine was editor. In 1999, the editorial office had moved to Singapore and Dr. Maxka was editor. We are aiming to have journal included in the index medical.

          - The 10th ASEAN Congress was held in Bangkok in 1994, the chairman of the organizing commette was Dr.Prinya Sakiyalak who the fourth Sukaman memorial lecturer. The important of exercise and preventing heart disease was raised in this congress. By including activity such as jogging in the morning before starting the scientific section and another sports addited in the program.
For the thirth decade of the federation, it started off by the 11th Congress in Jakata in July 1997, in conjunction with the 5th ASIAN-Pacific Congress Cardiac rehabilitation under the chairmanship of Dr.Dede Kusmana. Dr.Richard Ng from Singapore gave Sukaman memorial lecture under the title “21th Century Cardiovascular Challenges”

          - The 12th ASEAN Congress was held in Manila in 1998, under the chairmanship of the Dr.Antonio S. Sibulo Jr. and Dr.Boede Damojo of Indonesia who was the Sukaman memorial lecturer.

          - The 13th ASEAN Congress was held in Singapore in 2000, under the chairmanship of Dr.Richard Ng and Dr.Boonchob Pangspanich from Thailand who gave Sukaman memorial lecture.

          - The 14th ASEAN Congress was held in Kulalumper in 2002, under the chairmanship of the Dr.David Quek. The Sukaman memorial lecture was gave by Dr.H.B Calleja from Philippine.

          - The 15th ASEAN Congress was held in Pataya, Thailand, under the chairmanship of the Dr.Supachai Chaithirphan on October 2004. Many expect from all part around the world was participat in thie congress to update knowedge of cardiology. The topic of The Sukaman memorial lecture is “30 years of The ASEAN Federation of Cardiology (AFC). What is the big picture?” Looking back Cardiology in ASEAN Country had developed remarkable with many cardiact from government and private section of international standard.

         - 16th ASEAN Congress was held in Bali, Indonesia, under the chairmanship of Prof. Harmani Kalim on April 2007. The Sukaman memorial lecture was gave by Dr. Prinya Sakiyalak under topic “Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery Training in ASEAN”.

         - 17th ASEAN Congress will be hold in Hanoi, Vietnam on Mid October 2008.
